Spacecraft strikes Moon with intense flash

The SMART-1 lunar probe crashed into the Moon right on cue on Sunday morning. Mission controllers at the European Space Agency lost contact with the probe at 0542 GMT, indicating that it had struck close to the planned landing site on the lunar “Lake of Excellence”.

The xenon ion propulsion system, or XIPS (pronounced "zips"), is the culmination of nearly four decades of research into the use of electric propulsion as an alternative to conventional chemical propulsion. Available on the Boeing 601HP, or high power, and Boeing 702 satellite models, the increased efficiency possible with XIPS allows for a reduction in propellant mass of up to 90% for a satellite designed for 12 to 15 years operation. Less propellant results in reduced cost for launch, an increase in payload, or an increase in satellite lifetime, or any combination of the above.

An ion thruster (or ion drive), one of several types of spacecraft propulsion, uses beams of ions — electrically charged atoms or molecules— for propulsion. Dr Stephen Rosenberg and his team isolated T cells from the cancer patients and multiplied them in the lab.
FIGHTING CANCER WITH GENES

Next they used a virus to carry receptor genes into the T cells. These receptors are what enable the modified T cell to recognise specific cancers - in this case malignant melanoma.
When the modified T cells were transfused into the patients they began to attack the tumour cells.
For at least two months after the treatment, the modified cells made up at least 10% of the patients' circulating T cells.
The scientists are now looking at ways to enable greater numbers of the modified T cells to survive.
Dr Rosenberg said: "We've identified T cell receptors that will now recognise common cancers."

Nasa has awarded a multi-billion-dollar contract to the group to develop the Orion vehicle, which will replace the space shuttle when it retires in 2010.

When Dean Kamen unveiled the Segway® Human Transporter (HT) on ABC's Good Morning America, he described the machine as "the world's first self-balancing human transporter." When you look at the machine in motion, you get an idea of what he's talking about. Unlike a car, the Segway only has two wheels—it looks something like an ordinary hand truck—yet it manages to stay upright by itself.
To move forward or backward on the Segway HT, the rider just leans slightly forward or backward. To turn left or right, the rider simply turns the steering grip left or right.
The ability to balance on its own is the most amazing thing about the Segway HT, and it is the key to its operation. To understand how this system works, it helps to consider Kamen's model for the device—the human body.
If you stand up and lean forward, so that you are out of balance, you probably won't fall on your face. Your brain knows you are out of balance, because fluid in your inner ear shifts, so it triggers you to put your leg forward and stop the fall. If you keep leaning forward, your brain will keep putting your legs forward to keep you upright. Instead of falling, you walk forward, one step at a time.
The Segway HT does pretty much the same thing, except it has wheels instead of legs, a motor instead of muscles, a collection of microprocessors instead of a brain and a set of sophisticated tilt sensors instead of an inner-ear balancing system. Like your brain, the Segway knows when you are leaning forward. To maintain balance, it turns the wheels at just the right speed, so you move forward. Segway calls this behavior dynamic stabilization and has patented the unique process that allows the Segway HT to balance on just two wheels.

Astronomers used this inexpensive telescope to find an extrasolar planet transitingthe face of a Sun-like star 600 light-years from Earth. The telescope, which looks like a pair of binoculars,consists of two 200-millimeter telephoto camera lenses. The lenses are attached to electronic devices that measured slight dips in light output from the star, indicating that an object was crossing in front of it. Fastech 360z Bullet train JAPAN

East Japan Railway Co. unveiled the latest prototype of the next-generation bullet train, code-named "Fastech 360Z," to the press on Wednesday at its rolling stock laboratory center near Sendai in northern Japan. The six-car Fastech will aim to log the world's fastest speed for wheeled trains at 360 kilometers (224 miles) per hour during a normal journey. In comparison, France's TGV (Train Grande Vitesse) ordinarily runs at 300 kph. However, the TGV still holds the world record for wheeled trains for hitting 515 kph (320 mph). "The Fastech can run safely at more than 400 kilometers per hour but we do not have plans to test in the 500-kilometer range," company spokesman Makoto Yasuhara said. "We will start test runs at the weekend for about two years before we put it into commercial operations," he said.

Even though it is so small, it contains all the ingredients (e.g. fuel and solid oxygen source) required to make a solid propellant. Included within each particle is a near perfect, extremely thin (1 micron) protective barrier that separates a high-energy spherical solid oxygen core from a high-energy fuel layer. This protective barrier (plastic control barrier in figure) keeps the high-energy chemicals of the solid propellant from touching and making the fuel unstable. In current solid propellants, no such protective barrier can be made between high-energy chemicals, so using high-energy fuels with solid oxygen sources is not possible since they would touch and destabilize the solid propellant. In the SPS technology, the capability to use both high-energy fuels with protected high-energy solid oxygen will dramatically improve the power and performance of solid propellants.

New theory suggests the world is getting bigger

His theory proposes that the Earth, and by extension, all moons and planets, expand in size from the inside as they age. The bottom of the ocean is only between 70 to 180 million years old, said Adams. He hypothesized that Earth was originally ¼ its current size, and that the tectonic plates fit perfectly together on this smaller world which had significantly less areas of water. 600 million years ago Jupiter was also smaller, he said, and thus larger meteors came into the inner solar system, hitting Mars and our moon (as evidenced by their craters). Further, his notion of a growing universe negates the Big Bang theory, and he outlined how a solar system could come into existence as matter is attracted to a sun's electromagnetic field.

The completed system works like this. A solar collector gathers sunlight and focuses it on a heat exchanger filled with water. The water boils and creates steam which spins the turbine. The turbine, coupled to the alternator, produces electrical power. This raw power is then regulated using a switching regulator circuit to produce a high current power source. This is DC, so a user would have to convert this to AC power to run household appliances.

Homicide is currently the major cause (58%) of early death for Brazilians. A report from the United Nations has revealed that while the country has only 2.8% of the world's population, it is responsible for more than 11% of registered homicides.
According to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), around 600,000 people were killed in Brazil between 1980 and 2000, an average of 30,000 a year. In comparison, the thirty-year civil war that devastated Angola killed "only" 350,000 people. According to Timothy Cahill, an investigating leader for the Amnesty International, the number of deaths in Brazil falls easily within the U.N. parameters for a situation of civil war.
